Student/Faculty Presentations

Session #1 - 1:00-1:25pm

E-Poster Topic 1 - Anatomy Technologies

Presenter - Colin Ramsay

Two technologies, Youtube videos posted by my professor and the application Primal Pictures have helped me learning anatomy and physiology. These technology provides visual and verbal representations of course content that I can access beyond the classroom. The short 5-7 minute YouTube videos created by my professor used a cadaver to locate and identify the various body parts being covered each week. The Primal Pictures application allows me to view every part of the body and manipulate and interact with these parts in 3D. CATEGORY: Utilizing graphics, audio and animation

E-Poster Topic 2 - Organizing Work Using an E-portfolio

Presenter - Alexis Hellman

The technology implemented into the classroom that helped me learn was the development of an e-portfolio. When creating my e-portfolio I could integrate any technology of my choosing, in my case www.wix.com. I was expected to embed graphics and links to other websites, as well as putting all my individual and team assignments onto the e-portfolio. I could do this in various forms such as videos, Google-docs, pictures, GIFs, graphs (Piktochart and Infogram), websites, etc.. CATEGORY: Effective presentations, websites and course E-portfolio

E-Poster Topic 3 - i>Clicker

Presenter - Jamie Metreaud (Computer Information Systems)

The i>clicker is an interactive classroom response system allowing educators to poll students in class, view the results immediately, and then provide feedback. This can be used for class discussion, attendance, and testing. i>clicker can be used along with other programs, like PowerPoint, for asking prepared questions, or used by itself for impromptu questions. When polled, i>clicker students' responses can be anonymous or identifiable. Identified students can be assigned credit for class participation and/or correct responses. CATEGORY: Learning support tools

E-Poster Topic 4 - Speech Analysis Technology

Presenter - Tricia Nicholson, Kaitlyn Fish, Katherine Page, Cole Ellis, Savanna Lupton, Caroline Stottler (Communication Science and Disorders)

PRAAT, a computer program used in the Communication Science and Disorders undergraduate program, is the Dutch word for 'talk' or 'speak.' We were first introduced to PRAAT in our Phonetics and Speech and Hearing Science courses as we were instructed to use PRAAT’s ability to record utterances and produce spectrographs to observe measurements of frequency/pitch. We observed how vowel sounds and consonants normally look in a spectrograph (represented by the first, second, and third formants), which helped us to understand characteristics about the sound produced (whether it was voiced, or whether it was characterized by mainly air escape or non-voiced noise). By understanding these characteristics visually, it became fairly simple to identify the kind of phoneme that was recorded in an utterance. CATEGORY: Student research and research tools

E-Poster Topic 5 - Applications of Computer Simulations to Education

Presenter - Hunter Irving

The Leap Motion Controller is a hand-tracking peripheral for personal computers that allows users to interact with on-screen visualizations using hand gestures. Two apps created for use with the Leap Motion Controller, "Form & Function 3D" and "Sculpting" are educational tools that allow users to explore and study Biology and Art respectively. In Form and Function 3D, users can observe the inner workings of several animal hearts. In Sculpting, users can create three-dimensional objects by pushing and pulling a virtual ball of clay. CATEGORY: Learning support tools

E-Poster Topic 6 - Organizing & Managing Coursework Via E-Portfolios

Presenter - Nigel Davies (Library)

The students select a learner-friendly website creator (wix, weebly, wordpress, etc.) on which they will add all major & minor assignments. As they develop their site across the semester, it both prompts & enables the students to: consider how the course activities are related; incorporate previous course assignments & learning into subsequent activities; personalize & add resources & related materials. As the students progress through their majors, they can easily access these materials as needed, for other course work & into their professional E-Portfolio. CATEGORY: Organizing and sharing information

E-Poster Topic 7 - Going Paper-less and Email-less: Grading Using GoogleDrive and a Wacom Tablet

Presenter - Jason Osborne & Eric Marland (Mathematical Sciences)

New GoogleDrive access in Mountaineer Apps and digital writing hard/software in Wacom tablets and stylus. CATEGORY Documenting and managing course work

E-Poster Topic 8 - Formative Assessment Using Technology

Presenter - Stephanie West & Melissa Weddell (Recreation Management & Physical Education)

Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course.  They help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. This presentation will offer examples of formal and informal technologically-based methods for collecting ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. CATEGORY: Supporting in and out of class interaction/collaboration

E-Poster Topic 9 - Visual Teaching: Delivering Top-Notch Lessons

Presenter - Mona Abinader (Education)

Presentation software applications such as PowerPoint have become an embedded part of many instructional settings, both online and face-to-face. When used effectively, PowerPoint can be a highly effective tool that aids learning; however, if not used appropriately, it can instead disengage students and actually hinder learning. This presentation will outline the advantages of using visual slides in teaching and illustrate good design principles using Zen Design philosophy. CATEGORY: Effective presentations, websites and course E-portfolios

E-Poster Topic 10 - Using Padlet to Facilitate Brainstorming, Group Activities, and Formative Assessment

Presenter - Lindsay Masland (Psychology)

Padlet is a free virtual bulletin board that allows users to post pictures, links, and texts to organize and share information with others.  In my classes, I have used the anonymous function of Padlet to solicit feedback and reflection on contentious topics, (e.g., What is your biggest fear with regard to ethnicity and race issues?)  I also use Padlet as a virtual workspace where students can organize their work in group activities.  Because Padlet is a virtual resource, I can watch the progress of student groups in real time from the podium, which lets me know which groups need help. I can also type feedback onto the students' Padlets in real time as they work. CATEGORY: Organizing and sharing information

E-Poster Topic 11 - Creative Design Using Adobe Suite

Presenter - Emily Hutchinson (Graphic Design)

In Graphic Design it is important to be able to create and innovate at any moment. Adobe InDesign is used to create elegant layouts used for brochures, posters, books, and more. This technology empowers the creator to communicate ideas in new and exciting ways. Along with Adobe Illustrator, which allows you to draw, create logos and other images, and Adobe Photoshop which allows one to manipulate images and documents, these three programs are only limited by our imaginationCATEGORY: Utilizing graphics, audio and animation

E-Poster Topic 12 - How Technology Made Me a Composer

Presenter - Benjamin Dawson (Music)

Ihave used a computer music notation program, Sibelius, for the past 10+ years to aid and enhance writing music. I have discovered new writing ideas as a result of this program and computers, and have used it to work on more than 15 film scores. I have also used virtual sample patches as plugins, within the program, to realize instrument sounds. CATEGORY: Learning support tools

E-Poster Topic 13 - Utilizing the Social Media Platform

Presenter - Cameron Thomasson (Communication; Public Relations)

Social media is an extremely popular medium for quick and accessible two-way communication. When Professors and Administrators utilize social media to communicate with students, we are open to a 21st century style of learning. Communication professors specifically have used social media in many ways to enhance learning for students. Instructors relay information to students on a personal and active level. Social Media takes learning beyond the classroom and beyond the textbook to make our learning real and current. CATEGORY: Supporting in and out of class interaction/collaboration

E-Poster Topic 14 - Using ASULearn to Learn Effective Stage Accents

Presenter - Ian Lawrence (Theater & Dance)

My professor used Garageband recordings and pdfs on his ASULearn site to help to teach us stage accents in Advanced Voice Class and in our theatre productions. The materials helped me easily learn Stage Accents such as British and German. The short lessons are easy to follow and helped me improve the quality of my British dialect for our production of The Bald Soprano. CATEGORY: Utilizing graphics, audio and animation

E-Poster Topic 15 - Google Forms

Presenter - Tom Van Gilder & Kevin Snook (ITS)

Google offers a variety of apps that can offer students and teachers more efficient, convenient and collaborative ways to engage in learning. Google Forms is a simple app which ou can plan events, make a survey or poll, give students a quiz, or collect other information in an easy, streamlined way. You can create a form from Google Drive or from an existing spreadsheet that can record the responses to your form. CATEGORY: Utilizing surveys and quizzes
